My Honest Review of CIGA Design Mechanical Watches

Since 1969, CIGA has helped thousands of consumers navigate the uncharted waters of insolvency and ensure their medical and financial security. These channels also contain two screws each that at first seem completely cosmetic but which act as hour indices (2, 4, 6, 8). Within one of these channels, one can also see the crown tube that has been presented in red, matching the accents on the hands. A substantial detail of this case are the bilateral channels cut into the case by the sides of the dial.

If the product has no quality problems, the cost of returning the product such as freight, customs duties and other costs shall be borne by the consumer. The dial, which could easily come across as corny, is really rather well done and attractive. The three-dimensional globe has received an intricate micro-carved decoration that reflects real-world topographic data, replicating the mountain ranges and terrain of different parts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. The visible part of the globe display is clearly curved – Flat Earthers need not apply – providing a really interesting depth effect to the entire watch. "I want this watch to be a symbol for people who love the earth. I want to remind people to protect and love the earth."

I scrutinized the dial from up close and found no rough edges; further, the entire dial surface has been satin finished. Watch movements will regularly leave the factory in unsightly conditions if they’re not going to be visible, but a lot of time (and money) has gone into making sure this dial and movement look the part. On to the highlight of the CIGA Design Series Z, the skeletonized dial. Indeed, most of the dial has been completely skeletonized which gives the watch its snazzy look. Additionally, many of the elements of the movement have also been skeletonized which allows for a largely unobstructed view into the inner workings. Overall, the case is solidly built and unique in its design, clearly offering a sleek sports look while also integrating with the skeletonized look of the watch.

Speaking personally as collector who cherishes the heart behind gadgets – not just gears – CIGA‘s origin story gives special meaning to the pieces on my wrist. Each feels part of a living creative community versus another soullless branding exercise. Jianming recounts early memories gifting his first self-built watches to smiling village elders. The joy of elevating his community through artisanal craft stuck with him for life.

CIGA Design's victory at last year's GPHG, however, is evidence that these older customs might be starting to change. For the first time in the GPHG's 21-year history, the show had a winner from outside the traditional horological meccas in Europe and Japan. Overcoming a crowded field of mostly Swiss-made timekeepers, a small company named CIGA Design became the first Chinese company ever to be recognized by the Geneva Grand Prix.

But for an authentic pulse check, mass customer feedback trumps all. "At 40mm wide and 11mm thick, with a design this interesting, it’s going to get noticed. The watch feels dense, like there is more than you’d expect packed inside, giving it a sense of value." Here too CIGA brings a delicate balance of avant garde and versatile elegance across their collections. Signatures like the Blue Planet‘s engraved case and industrial multi-layer style play beautifully against conservative colors. Different from the traditional hard connection between watch movement and case, the patented structure is flexible to enhance the vibration resistance of the me-chanical watches. In the tight-knit world of Swiss watchmaking, China’s dual identity as a manufacturing center and a fast-growing luxury market is well understood.

Does that mean I think the timekeeping display used on the Blue Planet is particularly practical? No, but it is a genuine, successful attempt at doing something different. And in a conservative craft like watchmaking, I think that should always be admired. The latest edition of the Blue Planet watch features a GPHG logo, promoting the watch's award-winning status, printed on the exhibition caseback. "Design plays the biggest role in the watch industry," Zhang says. "I'm influenced by Bauhaus principles, so I started thinking about what a watch means to the end-user, to the owner."

Yet his origins differ vastly from privileged Swiss and Japanese intuitional training. Jianming taught himself watchmaking from manuals and books over years tinkering in a small Chinese village workshop. However functional concerns around fit are vastly outweighed by stellar appraisals of CIGA‘s uniqueness and real-world performance exceeding its price category. Beyond admiring looks from their social circle, folks also highlight great timekeeping, easy wearing comfort and durable build quality across years of ownership. Thus far I‘ve shared my own enthusiast testing and experts‘ opinions on CIGA Design‘s watch achievements.

After patiently waiting for around seven months, CIGA Design was finally able to ship me a sample of the GPHG Award-winning Blue Planet, all the way from the company's headquarters in Shenzhen, China. At 12, one can even get a look at the mainspring within the barrel and observe as it coils up as the movement is wound. If this design speaks to you, you’re presumably open to something a bit unconventional and attention-grabbing, anyway. So perhaps it’s not necessarily a drawback for you that it can elicit a response along the lines of “What the heck is that? ” Despite its prominent globe motif, it’s also kind of got an extraterrestrial, flying-saucer-like vibe to it.

The impression uses actual topographical data for mountain ranges and islands as well, so it truly is stunning to look at. As something that could really look a little kitch, CIGA Design has killed it. CIGA Design won the award for combining an interesting design (the globe is engraved to provide topographic detail) with genuinely imaginative mechanical watchmaking, all placed in a relatively affordable package that starts under $1,000 USD.

Across two years of daily testing, my CIGA watches have remained scratch-free thanks to durable Sapphire crystal glass, surgical grade stainless steel and Grade 5 titanium cases. I also swim and shower with my watches regularly thanks to 100M water resistance ratings. Notably, they’ve harped on the fact that they have no intention of releasing future watches that are more and more expensive. This is key, as it has become all too common for smaller brands to double or triple the retail price of subsequent model releases after they gain a bit of traction among collectors looking for value at the lower end of the price spectrum. Unlike other watch brands that attempt to obscure the fact that their watches are manufactured in China or that they employ Chinese-made components in their movements, CIGA Design transmits no qualms about the origin of their timepieces.

Earlier we covered CIGA‘s meteoric rise from their early Polygon series to globally acclaimed hits like Blue Planet in detail. So across enthusiasts, journalists and everyday fans alike – CIGA punches far above expectations. Now that you know the pieces, let‘s examine the remarkable horlogist behind the brand next. Of course, the most impressive horologists also understand art‘s subjective nature. So by the metrics that matter most – precision engineering, versatile aesthetics and durable craftsmanship over decades – CIGA definitely stands toe-to-toe with revered Swiss maisons. Founded in 2013 by chief designer Zhang Jianming, CIGA Design is the creative off-shoot from over 2 decades of manufacturing experience at parent company Fire Horse Workshop.

He also serves as a period disc jockey for the station, filling the airwaves with music from the 1930s depression era.

Ride information

As a result, Walt decided to use the Audioanimationic animals for the attraction. Will you be channeling your inner skipper and picking up one of these Jungle Cruise dessert bowl souvenirs? If you can't get enough of those wise-cracking skippers, check out Skipper Show, which features stand-up comedy from a group of former cast members. When the ride was in the planning stages, Walt Disney wanted to use live animals on the Jungle Cruise, but when he found out that many of them were nocturnal, Imagineers turned to mechanical ones instead. A studio recorded soundtrack of the Jungle Cruise was released in 1968 by Disneyland Records included as the B side of the album Walt Disney Presents The Enchanted Tiki Room and the Adventurous Jungle Cruise (ST-3966). The Jungle Cruise attraction has always featured narration by a live Disney Cast Member; for the release the narration was provided by Thurl Ravenscroft.

The ride underwent refurbishments to become more politically friendly with its depiction and diversity of characters. This opened up the opportunity to improve several other areas of the adventures as well. What makes the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland different from the version at Walt Disney World? The Jungle Cruise is one of the twelve opening day attractions at Disneyland.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes that has been made is in relation to Trader Sam. It appears Trader Sam has turned the Jungle Cruise’s lost & found area into his very own gift shop (you know Trader Sam, he’s always looking to make some money and come out ahead). The new scenes, backstory, and updated animatronics aim to create an enhanced story and guest experience. Walt Disney Imagineers completed a major refurbishment on Jungle Cruise, which reopened to guests today at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Jungle Cruise is one of the original opening day attractions from Disneyland’s opening on July 17, 1955.

The station and surrounding area are themed to a more upscale African city, as opposed to an isolated jungle outpost. This version shares a station building with the park's steam train ride, Western River Railroad. Within the boathouse, voices of Jungle Navigation Company personnel give instructions to guests. The spiels in Tokyo Disneyland are delivered in Japanese and skippers bow to the audience after each joke.

Disneyland Resort is the home for Disney100, where guests can enjoy “Wondrous Journeys” at Disneyland and “World of Color – ONE” at Disney California Adventure. A movie loosely based on the experience was released in 2021, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. We spotted a new dessert bowl souvenir celebrating Disney100 Years of Wonder and the Jungle Cruise attraction at Disneyland today. The jokes are no better in California, and the only major difference is that the Anaheim ride doesn't have a cave section.

The group then passes by another waterfall, Schweitzer Falls, and encounters a pool of hippos. They are about to charge the boat until the skipper scares them off, either via yelling or gunshot. The boats escape into Africa and pass a large safari camp where several curious gorillas have discovered clothes, guns, hammocks, and books, as the "Trashin’ the Camp" song from Tarzan plays on a nearby 1930s radio.

Storyline

While the lands may be laid out differently, and feature slightly different theming, they’re quite similar. At Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, the Jungle Cruise starts inside a Cambodian temple. Guests onboard enter the temple, where they’ll spot a Bengal tiger, cobra, and monkey. Instead, the ride begins by taking Guests past a series of Cambodian ruins. As a result, the ride’s scenes are in a different order at each park, leading to a bit of a mixed-up or different story order. You feel more isolated on the Walt Disney World attraction, which makes the experience seem more realistic.

This soundtrack was also used in Disneyland television features as early as 1964. The Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland attractions are very similar to each other, with the exception of a few minor differences. While the boats in the Magic Kingdom's attraction travel counter-clockwise, the boats at Tokyo Disneyland travel in a clockwise direction.

Now in its third month, the Jungle Cruise dock refurbishment is past the halfway point as work moves to a new portion of the queue. The project includes removing wood paneling from the dock and replacing it with what appears to be a composite material. While visiting Magic Kingdom, we stopped by Jungle Cruise before the lines got too long to get an updated look at the work and progress. Around the time of the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom, the skippers' guns were removed. They returned around November 2004 in the form of wired props that played gunfire sounds over the boats' PA systems.

Drums and chanting are heard as the boats enter through the Congo and end up in a place called "Head-Hunter Country". Guests soon pass by a group of celebrating jungle natives in a tribal village. After quickly avoiding an ambush of furious, spear-wielding tribesmen, guests can spot another boat being taken over by chimpanzees as they raid the boat of its supplies and accessories. The boats then pass by more chimpanzees who have raided the box of butterflies.

The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section. The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971. The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats.

Believe it or not, the Jungle Cruise attraction we know and love today at both Disneyland and Disney World had an interesting origin story. Walt Disney Pictures produced a True-Life Adventures series in the late 1940s, which gave Walt himself the inspiration to add an “Adventureland” to Disneyland Park. The centerpiece of this Adventureland would be a “jungle river cruise.” Walt’s initial idea for this cruise was larger than life; he dreamed up the idea of populating the attraction’s landscape with real animals. But, due to logistics, that grand idea morphed into animated animals similar to audio-animatronics. Disney often incorporates content from this attraction into limited-time food or merchandise throughout the parks.

The queue takes place in a small boathouse less elaborate than the boathouses found at the other parks. After winding through the queue, guests board one of the boats and meet their skipper who speaks either English, Cantonese, or Mandarin, to accompany the park's guests who speak many different languages themselves. The changes included removing the headhunter tribe, the pygmy camp, the previous trapped safari, and Chief Nah-Mee. This attraction also explicitly featured, "Adventureland" as a geographic location in-universe rather than an anachronistic combination of locales. In the queue's entrance is company founder Dr. Albert Falls' map of the, "Jungle Rivers of Adventureland", a series of supernatural rivers connecting locations across the world into the realm of, "Adventureland". Throughout the queue are references to the lost crew of the Kwango Kate consisting of skipper Felix Pechman XIII, Dr. Kon Chunosuke, Siobhan Murphy, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and Dr. Leonard Moss.

Being that it is one of the 12 opening day attractions that still exist, it has definitely stood the test of time (and corny jokes) to be one of the busiest attractions at the park. The boats then depart and head down the river, past Tarzan's Treehouse, where the skipper tells guests to wave goodbye to the guests traversing the treehouse, for they will never see them again. The boats then drift past an Indian elephant and her calf playing in the water, followed by another elephant showering in a waterfall. Inside, a peacock is seen showing off his feathers as well as some king cobras, giant spiders, monkeys, and a Bengal tiger can be found. After they exit, they come across an elephant bathing pool where numerous Indian elephants are relaxing in the water. The cruise concludes after the boat narrowly avoids being sprayed by water from one of the elephants.

In fact, he was the designated skipper Walt always asked for when he went on the jungle cruise. Lee taught me everything he knew about timing, voice inflection, delivery, eye contact, involving the audience, humor in good taste, and overall stage presence. A portion of the nearly two dozen Indian elephants being added to Disneyland's jungle river cruise is viewed here in the artist's sketches.

FBI investigates 'suspicious death' of cruise ship passenger

carnival cruise ship death

When the ship returned to Charleston on March 4, the FBI "responded to process the passenger’s room." The death of a woman onboard a Carnival cruise ship in the Bahamas is being investigated by the FBI. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was found unresponsive on Carnival Sunshine last Monday as the ship sailed to Nassau, according to a statement released Sunday by the FBI Columbia field office.

Cruise passenger died a "natural death," Carnival says

"This is a matter for authorities in The Bahamas and Charleston and we have no further comments." FBI spokesman Kevin Wheeler said the agency is not releasing the name of the woman who died during the Sunshine's Feb. 27 voyage to Nassau, Bahamas. A Japanese consortium made up of coastal shipping company Imoto Lines and marine software company Marindows is launching a government-backed effort to develop a next-generation containership. Plans call not only for the vessel to address decarbonization with the ability to operate emissions-free, but also to address the emerging challenges due to the lack of seafarers in Japan. The companies have scheduled the completion of the vessel for January 2027.Imoto, which is a leading operator of coastal feeder ships,...

Wheeler said this incident was isolated, and there was no threat to any other passengers before or after the passenger was found deceased. He was reported missing by his fiancée late Monday afternoon, the cruise ship operator told Insider's Natalie Musumeci and Hannah Towey on Tuesday. (WCBD) – Authorities are investigating a suspicious death aboard a Carnival Cruise ship that sails out of Charleston. The SPA will keep its 1970s-era cruise terminal on the Union Pier site to host short-term port-of-call visits from cruise ships. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fall of a Carnival cruise passenger who fell overboard on his first cruise, Fox News Digital reported on Wednesday. A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line says the company is cooperating fully with authorities' investigations. Officials say the passenger's death was an isolated incident and that there was no other threat to any other passengers. Cunard Line took delivery today, April 19, from Fincantieri on its first new cruise ship built for the storied brand in 14 years. One of the most visible changes Carnival reported involves increased random screening of passengers’ luggage during embarkation.

Especially with high occupancy expected during spring break and again in the summer, the goal is to provide an environment for all passengers’ enjoyment. No statics exist on the number of passenger deaths each year at sea but like any large city, medical situations occur. The Carnival Sunshine accommodates over 3,000 passengers when it is full and has a crew of over 1,000. Out of respect for the family, the cruise line declined to offer additional details. However, it was reported that the woman’s body was removed from the ship when it reached Nassau in the Bahamas and that her husband had also disembarked from the cruise. The Bahamian police were reportedly reviewing the circumstances and planning an autopsy.

The guest's death was an isolated incident, and no other passengers were at risk. FBI Evidence Response Team members board the Carnival Sunshine (102,8503 gross tons) when the vessel returned to Charleston, South Carolina. They were there after having been notified that a 44-year-old woman had been found unresponsive during the first day of a cruise that departed from Charleston on February 27.

"Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau," a Carnival spokesperson previously told PEOPLE, "and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy." It said it was investigating the suspicious death of a female passenger who was unresponsive and was subsequently declared dead on the ship. Crew members and medical staff on Carnival's Sunshine ship, which was traveling from Charleston, South Carolina, to Nassau, Bahamas, responded to an unresponsive female passenger on Feb. 27, the FBI said Monday.

On Monday, we reported that Carnival Cruise Line reported a “suspicious death” involving a woman aboard the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship. The guest was traveling with her husband when, according to local newspaper, Channel 5 WCSC, Carnival crew members were made aware of an unresponsive woman on Feb. 27th and attempted life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead on the ship. “The FBI investigates certain crimes on the high seas, as well as suspicious deaths of U.S. persons. As such, FBI Evidence Response Team (ERT) members responded to process the passenger’s room once the ship returned to the Charleston port on March 4,” said Kevin Wheeler with the FBI Columbia field office. Officials are now reporting that a woman passenger who died on a Carnival cruise ship likely died from a “medical condition” days after the media widely reported it as a “suspicious death,” that was being investigated by the U.S. The death is the latest in a series of incidents that drew widespread media attention and are prompting Carnival Cruise Line to institute a new “Respectful and Considerate Code of Conduct,” in advance of its spring break cruises.
