Over the past century and a half, the wide-open Texas skyline has changed. But in the home, restaurant and institutional kitchens of America, you’ll find that the dedication of C.H. No more aparent than the commitment to excellence offered at the Guenther Hosue. In 1902 Erhard Guenther, Hilmar’s youngest son, became president of Pioneer Flour Mills. The changes that he made gave The Guenther House the look it has today.

King William District home

He began construction of his vernacular native limestone home in the district at King William and Guenther streets. The stones were quarried in the area that now is Brackenridge Park, and wood used in the construction was East Texas pine. The original entrance to the house faced southward towards the mill. A 1915 expansion of the house, changed the entrance to the north side, fronting the San Antonio River. The original entrance now serves as a hallway between the museum and the River Mill Store part of the house.[3][11] The top floor of the house is known as the Roof Garden and once hosted dances. The south side of the house now has a patio and arbor for outdoor dining.

The dwelling’s northern façade still reflects its original 1859 composition, though much of its current detailing was added in 1915 and is reflective of the Arts and Crafts Movement popular during that period. Major features on this façade include curvilinear brackets supported by a gabled green tile canopy over the entrance and casement windows on the first and second levels installed prior to 1915. Bass and her family have lived in the home since early 2023 after she was elected to the position. In 1848, a twenty-three-year-old apprentice millwright boarded Europe bound for America. Her grandfather was chief financial officer and her father chief executive officer of Angelus. Window coverings, similar to those shown in a 1902 photograph, are of “Rosini” lace imported from Germany. The mirrors are arranged to give the illusion of a never-ending reflection.

Stones were quarried from an area near what is now the San Antonio Zoo for a single-story residence. The mortar joining these stones was made from rocks gathered downstream. Thankfully, LA is spoiled for choice when it comes to all that’s cold and creamy, with scoop shops parked everywhere, from the Westside to SGV, the Valley to the South Bay. Get it with half and half to make it extra creamy - it balances out the chocolate well. They use a water drip siphon system for their iced coffee, which means that the inside of their shop looks like a Breaking Bad set.

And, as any writer/artist/actor in LA will tell you, using the McDonald’s Wi-Fi while working at Dinosaur Coffee is a true struggling artist rite of passage. You’ll probably walk by Obit & Del’s once or twice before you notice it, but it’s worth seeking out this new coffee shop in an oddly barren section of Hollywood Blvd. in Thai Town. A great spot to pick up lunch, HIlltop is also a cafe with locations in Inglewood and View Park-Windsor Hills. Their regular cold brew coffee is potent but not overpowering, and the nitro version is like drinking a coffee smoothie - we love it.

Flavors change daily and are inspired by Asian desserts, like Hong Kong-style milk tea, ginger-kissed tofu flower, and matcha almond. This 100-year-old ice cream brand still churns some of the city’s best scoops, anywhere. Of course, the Alhambra-based company’s soda fountain options (floats, malts, and more) are worth the trip to the original location or the more recently opened space in Glendora. The Brewster Street Icehouse building was built in 1932 and was originally owned by Union Pacific Railroad and later occupied by Yellow Freight Distribution, whose sign still hangs next to the female restrooms. Tucked away on Third Street in Beverly Grove, Ecco un Poco offers a surprising, abundant selection of fresh gelato and cones that — like all its flavors — are gluten-free.

Spoke is also one of those elusive spots with both high-quality coffee and a fantastic selection of beer and wine to transition into later in the day. East Hollywood’s Bolt keeps things simple, with one kind of cold brew made from Honduran beans. But we wouldn’t want any more than that, because the drink is smooth and not the least bit bitter. Plus, Bolt uses beans roasted in Cape Cod, and, if you’ve ever been to a Dunkin’ Donuts, you know New Englanders take their coffee very seriously. Now, it’s an absolutely essential spot, with a massive patio that’s ideal for social distancing, and some really great cold brew to go along with it.

We suspect that at some point, Los Feliz announced there would be free rent for any coffee shop that opened on Hillhurst. But the best of the many, many cafes on this Eastside street is Maru, a parking space-sized spot serving house-roasted coffee. Their cold brew is sweet and smooth, and if you’re looking for something a bit less hard-hitting, they’ve got our favorite iced matcha around. If there’s one single iced coffee drink in the city that we’d have every day, it would probably be the Layla Latte from VanillaBlack. The Layla is made with lavender and honey, and it’s sweet, creamy, and fragrant, without being too much of any one of those flavors.

Toppings are plentiful, and they’ve even got a few vegan options available. One of LA’s top practitioners of gelato, Bacio di Latte inside the Century City mall has the luscious creamy texture one would expect from top-quality Italian ice cream. The pistachio is a real gem, though the signature bacio di latte, or sweet cream, is a must-order as well. As a self-described “chef-y” Dairy Queen, Magpies Softserve embraces this label and turns it up to eleven. Hailing from Pennsylvania, this national chain has been making good inroads in Los Angeles, starting with a longtime Torrance window and now this prime LA spot along La Brea.
